Growing up, my parents would ALWAYS say “Friend is a COVENANT word.” It took a while for me to realize what they were saying, being that I was the girl that called EVERYONE my friend. As I grew in the Lord, I remember the pain of losing friends……of going through seasons with none. I remember people saying, quoting, preaching, etc., “God has set you apart.” “God is protecting you.” “Those people aren’t going where God is taking you.” And although I understood what they were saying, those words pacified, but never truly satisfied me. One day, while spending time with the Lord, I started crying and complaining about friends, “I just don’t understand, Lord. Blah. Blah. Blah.” I remember pausing and hearing Him say, “WHAT ABOUT ME?” It was in that moment that years of crying and seemingly unanswered questions and prayers were finally satisfied with this simple truth: JESUS is the BEST FRIEND that I could ever have. Although godly, covenant friends are blessings from the Lord, they should never and can never take the place of JESUS. HE is the FRIEND that sticks closer than any brother. HE is the FRIEND that KNOWS you BEST, yet LOVES you MOST. HE is the friend that will NEVER leave you, forsake you, forget you, ignore you, or overlook you. To HIM, YOU are one of a kind……simply irreplaceable. Who wouldn’t want to serve a God who is also a covenant keeping, faithful friend?!?!? So whether you have three really good friends or none…..be encouraged……and look to JESUS! Again, He’s the best friend anyone could ever have!!
